January Reflection

It's been a week since the Capitol was breached by a mob intent on disrupting the peaceful and orderly transfer of power to our next, duly elected President. Some thoughts as I listen to the House debate on the Article of Impeachment being brought against Donald Trump:

1.) Precedent is defined as an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances. From my point of view, to NOT move forward with Impeachment sets a precedent that the actions and inactions of this President are acceptable. In essence that because he is out of office in a week we should just let this go and move on...I am not able to see merit in this argument.

2.) The definition of abet is to encourage or assist (someone) to do something wrong, in particular to commit a crime or other offense. I have read the entirety of President Trump's remarks to the protesters-cum-rioters on Jan. 6. I have no doubt that what those present heard was a call to arms...it is human to hear what we are listening for, for confirmation of our beliefs and the actions we think should be taken.

3.) The Presidential Oath of Office is actually quite short and asks that the oath taker do 2 things: Faithfully execute the Office of the President and preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Establishing and perpetuating the big lie around the results of the election does not strike me a meeting the requirements of either part of the Oath of Office... Is it a 'high crime or misdemeanor? I think so - but I'm not a lawyer or Constitutional expert - but just the precedent (see #1) is more than a little concerning.

4.) I am a 'glass half full' person. And I know democracy is hard, it is messy and, even though it isn't perfect, it is better than the alternatives. I/We need to stay in the game, recognize truth, and value diversity in all its forms.

5.) The Maryland General Assembly opens its 2021 session today. Sending all best wishes to the many Senators, Delegates, advocates and staffers I know - stay safe and do good my friends.

6.) I've noted this before, we are all struggling right now. Our struggles may look different, but we are all struggling. Be kind, remember to breathe, and be generous in providing grace to others as well as yourself.

It's mid-April and this corner of Maryland is greening and blooming and greening some more. Some thoughts as the days get longer and warmer: 1.) Ramadan Mubarak to all who are celebrating - hoping yo
